Simple Question from a Simple Mind

Orion 9.1 SP2 (at least I think I put it in right).

2 pollers running on the system, a LOT of nodes, 13~15000 total.

When trying to load balance the pollers, it tells me to stop the pollers before proceeding. How do I stop the pollers? My NetPerfmon.exe task won't terminate normally in any case. SolarWinds says this is a known issue having to do with the poller needing to "finish". If this is the poller task, this is a pretty serious bug since it nearly prevents the proper operation of the system.

What risks am I taking just moving nodes to the other poller while the system is running.

If I had to guess, I'm guessing you risk corrupting some data in your database if you try to move nodes while polling is still running. The only thing I could suggest is to set the NetPerfMon service to manual or disabled and reboot your servers. You can then balance your nodes, set the service back to automatic and reboot both servers again. Not an elegant solution, but it should work.

Not a great solution for me. One of the pollers is actually on the SQL server. Not a great practice I know, but the machines is vary potent and shows no signs of stress. There are other DB's on the machine besides Orion and repeated re-boots would not make me any friends.

This is close to what I've been doing, I try to stop everything, kill NetPerfmon.exe, restart and do some intense fooling around to get the pollers running again. Very tedious. SolarWinds should concentrate on resolving the NetPerfMon.exe issues I think.

Have you tried using Programs-> SolarWinds Orion> Advanced Features -> Orion Service Manager to stop the services?

Even when using the Orion Service Manager to stop the services, my Network Perfomance Monitor service has always taken a very long time to stop. I just upgraded Sunday from v9.1 to v9.1 SP2 and I stopped all the services before applying the service pack. The Network Performance Monitor services eventually stopped on both of my polling engines, but it took a good 15 - 20 minutes.

Yes, I've too tried to shutdown orderly. I let it sit for moe than an hour one time but I couldn't get out of the "stopping" state. This causes a lot of grief when trying to install service packs too.

I have to use the Windows Services MMC to stop the Poller.
The Solarwinds GUI will just timeout and the service will never stop.

The pollers read the node, interface and volume info from the DB into memory when they first start up.
If you don't stop the polling services, the changes will be overwritten the next time the pollers write their original config back to the DB.

I have the same problem...one of my polling engine which is a primary one suddenly stopped. I have tried restarting it through MMC services but it doesn't fixed the problem, also tried to reboot the server itself
