Warranty Information discussion

Warranty (hardware and software) information is something we all suffer with. It can be servers, switches (including routers, firewall, etc.), or software. Almost everything we deploy has a warranty; also terms, expiration, and renewal dates.

Has anyone been succesful in implementing warranty gathering for the wide variety of devices we implement on our networks? Obviously we can not rely on snmp gathering of this information since each organization implements this differently, if at all.

On my network almost each device is monitored making NPM the central data collection source. I believe NPM would be the ideal candidate for this information. Any ideas on how this could be implemented?

I dont think there is any way of "gathering" this data because as far as I know, no devices store that data themselves...

The best you can do is create a report of all serial numbers...

a manual way would be to create custom properties for all devices and save the wanted information onto each and every devices custom property (you could do a mass edit with devices in the same contract) but thats a pain to keep up to date :P

I agree that the process is a manual data entry mechanism, it probably will always be. I would like to learn if the process has been implemented by someone already and if so how to go about it.

If our community has a strong desire to see this as an enhancement maybe SW may wish to undertake it before every interested organization goes it independently and we have a variety of solutions.

Consider: Company Y has a really good solution and is willing to share, it may be a widely adopted solution and maybe even product suppported.
