Problem editing custom property via web interface
ajsburns
Hi all,
I have added a field on a node view to allow the editing of a particular custom property (basically to allow first line support to store the ticket number of calls against that node).
This works great under my login, but does not work for the login used by the helpdesk. What happens is that they can see the field & input data, but when they hit 'Update' it takes them back to their homepage & doesn't actually update the field.
The only pertinent difference between the accounts is that my account is allowed to customize the views & theirs isn't. As soon as I enable this functionality on their account, the update works. I do not want to give them the functionality as it would allow them to edit other fields I don't want them changing!
This would appear to me to be a bug, and I was wondering if anyone else had come across the same problem? Or could one of the Solarwinds guys comment?
Many thanks,
Al

Editing a custom property is more or less akin to "customizing" a view.
In the current system of editing things, it's not a bug. SW will need to make an allowance for more granular editing for this to work as you'd like. That's going to require a fair bit of work on SW's part to accomplish since a simple yes/no flag would need to be replaced by a more complicated read/write access system.

If you don't mind giving them rights to "clear events/alerts", then you could use the code in the following post:
www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp
(about half way down)
This allows only users whose account is configured to allow event clearing to edit/update a custom property via the web page. You do not have to give them web page edit permissions.
....but watch out for this gotcha:
www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp
(again, about halfway down)
