Explaning the Difference between TX & RX Utilization with respect to total bandwidth

Question

Everyone, I have a group of Managers that need to understand this subject.

Does any one out there have any suggestions on how to best put this in laymen's terms. This question comes from them looking at a interface chart that has RX at 125% and TX at 101%. The circuit is a 6M port x 2M ePVC MPLS.

Any suggestions would be helpful since Solarwinds manuals do not have this explaination nor an section on how to read the charts that I could post as a FAQ on my site.

go into NPM and look at interface details.

In the top section, you should be able to "override" what Orion pulled from the device as input and output rates.  you can use bandwidth statements to sway what orion gets also (probably cleaner, assuming it doesn't mess up your EIGRP for Cisco environments).

Hey Jim,

I feel your pain 'sort of' as i used to look at some of your charts for our SBU(Lighting Systems) and say "how could we be using 238% RX and 110%TX?"... :)

Bandwidth Utlization formula:

Utilization:  The average percentage of bandwidth utilization rates the report period.
 
Bandwidth Utilization   | (Total Bytes In + Total Bytes Out) x 8 x 100% |
                                    |---------------------------------------------    |  / report period
                                    |  (Speed In + Speed Out)                                 |
