We have looked multiple times at Google Maps, however, their cost structure is very unfriendly. We have been looking at other alternatives. In the meantime, someone in the community wrote their own integration which you can ready about here

I'm sure it seems like an easy way but I've used Google Image search a number of times to find some unique maps.

What I'd like to know is how to trigger message boxes, like shown in your example map!! THAT would be cool.

Google has lowered their pricing. If you're interested in keeping your personal maps personal, then this is the way to go. The price has been dropped from $4 per 1,000 map loads to $0.50 per 1000 map loads (1/8th the original price). You can view the Google Geo Developers Blog for more details.
