Advanced Alerts not working

I have written an advanced alert (as a test of the advanced alerting) to monitor the backup exec agent on a test server. When I stop the agent on the server I get no notifications. I also have a basic alert for this server and if I shut the server down or unplug the server from the network I get a basic alert saying the node is down.
I have tried to stop and start the alerting service but that didn’t change the status. I have also tried viewing the tutorial thinking that I might have missed something in the setup, but the link does not work for me.
Has anyone had any issues similar to mine, and if so what did you find helped correct the problem?
