Netcool integration with Solarwinds NPM 12.2

Hi All,

I would like to know what would be the requirement for the intergrating solarwinds with netcool for alerting purpose. I have read multiple posts but i dont have an answer

is there any scripts needs to be mentioned for each each alert rules to proble the netcool for setup alert.

i think u will have to do 2 things..

1. upload the Solarwinds MIBs on Netwcool.

2. For each alert that should reach Netcool, define a trap action inside the trigger action while configuring the alert...you can use the default trap template or modify based on your requirement...

I havent dont integration with Netcool but have seen it with other tool like Zenoss and this was our approach...

We have 2 known approaches to it (this needs be setup on alert actions - either use SNMP Trap approach or EIF posteifmsg Utility provided by Netcool)

1. Forward Alerts from Solarwinds as an SNMP Trap to Netcool - (provide Solarwinds MIB files to netcool team and ask Netcool team to convert it into rules - MTtrapd (snmp) probe **note the rules file will have to be modified later as required because Traps.mib on solarwinds will only have one generic rule in it **there is another point to note only SNMP V2 traps can be forwarded from Solarwinds)

a. MIBs and location of it on Solarwinds primary poller, copy both the mibs (both are interdependent) and send it to Netcool team for conversion into rules file

Default location C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds

SolarWinds-Products.mib defines OIDs for SolarWinds products.

SolarWinds-Traps.mib provides a template, including OIDS, for defining traps.

2. Forward Alerts from Solarwinds as posteifmsg and these messages can be received by Netcool EIF Probe, you will have to install this utility on SolarWinds primary poller, configure it and then use it to forward alerts as messages from Solarwinds to Netcool, you can call this utility from alert actions on Solarwinds once installed and configured

Note: If you use this approach Netcool team will need to use an EIF messaging Probe on their end to capture the messages coming from solarwinds.

From the Netcool team, they needed only 3 traps which needs to be sent to the MTTrapd. SolarWinds needs to send SNMP traps in usual way ... but not forward every trap it receives.

SolarWinds needs to automatically trigger a script that will pass details on to Netcool for a subset of devices/alerts ... for NEW, UPDATE and CLOSE/CLEAR events

I would expect a system like SolarWinds has the same capability, you just need to figure out how to configure it.

We have huge number of fields in Solarwinds and i am new in the integration part.

Hi Subhash,

1. Be it a single trap or 1000 different traps, rules on Netcool probe should exist to consume the traps coming from Solarwinds - Check if the rules have already been built on MTTrapd probe with Netcool team (this is the first thing), if it is already existing then ask them what parameters are they looking for, we will have to pass those attributes on the trap accordingly.

2. Your statement is confusing - "SolarWinds needs to send SNMP traps in usual way ... but not forward every trap it receives", what are you trying to achieve here ? Traps and Alerts are 2 different things with respect to SolarWinds, if you are talking about the traps received by SolarWinds then the actions needs to be set on SNMP Trap Receiver on SolarWinds (Identify which SNMP Trap should be forwarded to Netcool and filter then accordingly in Trap Receiver).

3. If you are talking about sending a trap to Netcool for the alerts that SolarWinds generate then follow the approach mentioned by me (say for example - SolarWinds will identify that a node is down which it is monitoring, you could create an alert for it and forward it as a SNMP Trap to Netcool via the approach i mentioned) - we could create alerts for specific set of devices/conditions as mentioned by you.

4. I am confused again - "SolarWinds needs to automatically trigger a script that will pass details on to Netcool for a subset of devices/alerts ... for NEW, UPDATE and CLOSE/CLEAR events" - not sure what you are talking about, this is a custom piece, if you have a script which is in place or if you planning to build some script which does that - then yes SolarWinds can call script through its actions - but I am really not sure as this is something specific to your environment.

NEW,UPDATE -> Is nothing but trigger action in SolarWinds

CLOSE, CLEAR -> Is nothing but reset action in SolarWinds

If its SNMP V2 Traps that you need to fire from SolarWinds alert action then why a script ? We already have a built in function for sending a trap under SolarWinds alert actions, if you are talking about something else due to some sort of implication in your environment then i guess you will need to create a script like the way you mentioned, BUT YES SolarWinds can call a script from alert actions.

Can i have the default trap template for solarwinds in trigger actions

1. Get the snmp community string from netcool folks for their server

2. Enter destination ip (network server ip) + community string provided by them

3. Use SNMP V2 trap in action

4. Fire a test alert with few solarwinds attributes

5. Ask Netcool team to enable the logs on their end - this trap will be ignored by MTTrapd probe as rule doesnt exist

6. Capture the trap from their logs - Then you will understand which attribute takes what value from the entire trap - you will see this information on their logs

This is the starting point for you, use the forwardsyslog metnod only on actions

If u want to play around more with default trap template then you will need Engineer Toolset plugin.. but based on your query i dont think you would require..

As Vinay pointed earlier, carry out some testing with the help of your Netcool Team....
