Hi Maurice and Happy New Year!
I'm in the process of getting our network infrastructure into the Orion NPM polling engine. I'm having great difficulty getting the Network Discovery tool to see a large number of our devices, unfortunately, and I hope someone can help.
We currently have over a thousand (1063, to be precise) Cisco switches and routers on campus, all lying within a known IP range. The network discovery tool, however, is only returning a very small number of these devices.
The following is taken from our device inventory in Netdisco:
Vendor Model Count
cisco 2811 2
cisco 29408TF 5
cisco 295024G 153
cisco 295048G 14
cisco 2950t24 441
cisco 296024 49
cisco 296024TT 39
cisco 296048 19
cisco 296048TT 99
cisco 29608TC 29
cisco 2960G24 23
cisco 2960G48 10
cisco 297024 6
cisco 297024TS 61
cisco 3524XL 1
cisco 3550-12G 4
cisco 356024PS 58
cisco 356048PS 2
cisco 3560G24PS 5
cisco 3560G24TS 1
cisco 37xxStack 29
cisco 6506 11
cisco 6509 1
cisco WSC6504E 1
Total: 1063
A discovery run of our entire IP range, however, only returned the following results:
Catalyst 29408 TF 1
Catalyst 37xx Stack 30
Cisco Catalyst 2950t 24 1
Cisco Catalyst 2960-8TC 2
Cisco Catalyst 6506 8
Cisco Catalyst 6509 2
Cisco Catalyst WSC 6504 1
Total: 45
As you can see, there is a very large discrepancy!
The odd thing is that I can add the missing devices manually through the web admin interface or the System Manager app with no issues. The devices are pingable and accessible by SNMP and telnet from the machine Orion is running on.
It's very important that I be able to add these devices automatically due to the large number we need to monitor and would appreciate any advice or guidance.
