Notepager Pro on virtual server

I am running the Orion Family of sofware on a virtual server, and I am trying to install Notepager Pro as a secondary alerting path for my network.

SolarWinds HOST server

Processor : 2.53ghz (x2)

RAM : 24GB

OS install: Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit

COM1 : serial modem 14.4k

NotePage Pro (EVALuation copy) is installed and able to query the modem

Processor : 2.53ghz

RAM : 3GB

OS install: 64bit

Solarwinds: NPM 9.5.1 SLX

I am trying to run Notepager Pro, but the virtual server will not access the physical ports on the server. They physical server is able to use Notepager, but the virtual will not recognize the modem. Has anyone else had this problem, and what solutions worked?

This is funny. I just found my cd from a notepager pro purchase back in 2003 for the old solarwinds server!

I have the same question, but as I understand it, VM's cannot access serial ports of the physical machine. So we're kinda screwed I think.

That is what I was thinking, but I'm hopeful that someone came up with a solution for this problem.

Hi ok to start with what are you using to virtualise your servers?

Xen, VM, Sun Virtual box?

Once we know this we migth be able to help getting the serial port worknig as with some its possible to get a pass through working.

Hi all.

I have set up a second alerting at one of our customers with Notepager Pro.
As a modem i've used a Huawai UMTS USB-Stick.

You can use this stick in your VMs (i did it with VM-Ware Server for testing).

The Huawai Sticks provide a Virtual Com-Port wich can be used by Notepager.
You just have to change the Com-Port number in the Windows System-Settings.

Insert a tiny prepaid simcard for cheap sms costs.
To send an sms use GSMAT for your carrier configuration with a Mobile-Phone or
Wireless-Modem.
This solution works great. Maybe this will do for you too.

Stephan, I've got a Huawei E161 with a SIM on a USBAnywhere connected to my Orion VM. I'm having trouble getting that to work. Can you elaborate on why the com port number needs to be changed in Windows System Settings? I see COM3 is a "Modem" showing the Huawei stick itself, COM4 is an "Application interface" to it, and COM5 is a "UI interface".

I setup the Huawei stick on a physical PC and it worked great so I know the stick and the SIM are good. Thanks.

Nevermind Stephan, I got it working without having to change any COM ports. It works great with a gen1 5-port USBAnywhere, a Huawei E161, and NotePager, you just need the most recent Windows 2003 drivers from the USBAnywhere website.

You may have an answer already, but Ill share what we have done.

We found that Digi makes a serial port redirector that is networked based.

Esentially, I installed software that redirects all calls to COM1: to an IP address of this digi box (which has a modem serially attached).

so far, its been working quite well. I have only 2 rules setup to use it, however - if my Internet connection is down, or the Exchange server is down. Otherwise, its not used.
