Monitoring Down Interfaces Without Sending Alert

I would like to add all interfaces in my devices to Solarwinds NPM. So, I can make a report how many interfaces are used and how many interfaces are available. It is good for me, as a base capacity planning for network expansion.

However, i don't want Solarwinds send alert for the interface that i know it is down as we haven't allocated it for any connection. Do you know how to do this?

The "Unplugged" feature is now in Orion. It should do this.

I would imagine you could supress the alerts using the Alert Manager, if that's your only problem. I would imagine (at least for me) the bigger issue would be the "down" interfaces cluttering the Nodes with Problems area and lowering the overall network downtime.

Thanks for your answer. Your point is correct as well. I am thinking about status negation. Let say a port is down. However this is the correct status for that port. So solarwind should think that it is fine. It will not trigger alert nor the issue you mentioned.

Is there work around for this? Will Solarwind team put it as next feature if not currently available?

It think t is good as well, if we want to make sure, for example, that telnet service in a server is not up all the time. When it is up, solarwind should send alert.

We are looking at potentially adding something that would satisfy your use case in the next major release.

Specifically the ability to set a port as "unplugged". When that property is set, Orion will not report the port as “down”, but instead, it will mark the status as "unplugged" and will not show up in alerts, Nodes with Problems, etc.

The same goes for interfaces, we are working on the ability to set an interface as unmanaged, similar to how you can do today with a node.

Couldn't you create a custom property that containts the "expected" state of an interface, and then in your alert compare the current state to the "expected" state and alert if they are different? This would allow you to know when a port you expect is down comes up, or one you expect to be up goes down.

Just wondering if this enhancement made it into the latest release of Orion?

This is something we're really looking forward to as well.
