Account Limitation

Is there any way of limiting an account by custom property rather than by the options that are avilable?

Yes...if you have the custom properties already created its a piece of cake.

On your Orion server, start->solarwinds network performance monitor->advanced features->account limitation builder.

In there, you can add new account limitations and tie them to a custom property. Once you have the limitations created here, you'll be able to select them as options in the web interface when you're setting up the account views.
