Server 2012 R2 to 2019 Upgrade Process

Hi,

We have a server running Windows 2012 R2 and the most recent version of the platform that it will support (NPM 12.3 and others). I want to upgrade it to the latest version and so need to migrate to a new server, which I would like to be Windows Server 2019. The blog post says to wait to upgrade until you've migrated servers, but I can't upgrade since 12.3 the latest I can put on 2012 R2. And I can't install 12.3 on Server 2019 as the earliest it supports is 12.4. I've already had to do an extra database move to get it migrated over to the SQL 2017 server and I would like to avoid that here, but I can't find an actual procedure for migrating the platform from Windows Server 2012 R2 to 2019.

OK so if your database has been migrated over already to SQL 2017 then do the step below if you have not migrated your data that would be your first step back up your database and restore to the 2017 SQL server.

Migrate the SolarWinds Orion SQL database to a new server

Go to your customer portal and download the latest NPM 2019.4 to your new 2019 server
Run the installer and select any other applications you have as well NO need to install the old versions.
When then configuration wizard appears point it to your new 2017 database that is the first step in the wizard
Continue with installation once the configuration wizard you will be updated to 2019.4

OK, thanks. Will the steps in this article still apply for copying folders and the license and all that even though the versions will be different?

cdaniel that article is pretty accurate, one thing i can't stress enough backup or snapshot your sql server, once you run the configuration wizard on the new server, it runs a sql schema and updates the database, which you can't roll back, so very important step.

files and folders is related to if you have created custom reports with the report writer or if you have created universal device pollers, which you can copy the data across.

So I can literally stand up a 2019 server, shut down my main polling engine, and point a 2019.4 install at my 12.3 database?

I've never done an O/S move and I'm wondering what the easiest way for a 2012 R2 12.3 to 2019 2019.4 move.

Thanks, I've also looked at the HA method but I guess its for a larger environment than just a single polling engine.
