monitor contents of a web page

Hello,

I have a web page which displays a queue length(wait time).

I want to extract this data from the web page and store it in orion database along with monitoring the queue length using NPM which will generate an alert if it goes above threshold value. I also need historical data of this queue length.

Apart from extracting this data from the web page using some java or html code; can i do this directly using orion solarwinds.

Hello Sunny!

The first thing you'll need to do is download the Oracle client onto the Orion server, if you have not already done so. We have one available in your customer portal : ( www.solarwinds.com/.../ ) (It's located under Additional Components -> Download Orion NPM Components -> Oracle Client).

Once that is installed, you'll need to fill out the template. To answer your previous questions:

Credential: Should be for Oracle, not the server

Destination Point Type: This is either SID or Service Name depending on how your Oracle DB is set up. On the Oracle server there should be a file called tnsnames.ora; you can find your SID or Service Name in there.

If you have APM, you could write a script in any language you like to go extract this value and hand it back as a statistic. If you have NPM only, you could still do it, but you'd need to have some system out there offer it up as an SNMP value (i.e., 1.3.1.6.1.4.99.99.99) using an exec. Here's an article that talks about how to extend SNMPD to offer additional information:

I have APM module. Please let me know how to move ahead. Any examples similar to my needs???

In that case the least-fuss option is going to be a vbscript APM component that pulls that web page, extracts the string you're interested in and returns that as its statistic. That'll let you use that value in alerts.

How are your vbscript skills?

Great. But i have never written a VB script. I am a UNIX system admin and only scripts that i have written are unix shell scripts.

Can you share a template of such script. I will study it and fit it for my use.
