Issues found in testing new release

Bugs found in testing of the 1/2/2007 Release of 8.0113

• Syslog messages are not showing up in the web page but are in the Syslog viewer utility
• When alerting from the Nodes table all custom information is available in the alert messages. When using alerts like Volume or Interface (pulling from a different table) the custom information is not available from the nodes table. There should be a way to pull the info easily, with a ${Nodes.xxxx} statement, It appears there is no join between the tables for alerting.
• Found same issue as everyone with the Custom MIB Poller. You can view the GET response upon set up, but it will not write to the table.
• There needs to be a way to easily total up the counters that are pulled from the custom MIBs. It is not enough to show that I have 40 connections per machine across 10 machines. I need to show the SUM of the connection per hour or per minute across all nodes filtered not the high water mark for all in the charts.
• Advanced alerts are not consistent; they will work for a short period of time and then stop with no rhyme or reason. It does appear to be better after maintenance and a backup is performed, but this is not consistent.
• Web Page is slow under load 5-10 users.
• Report writer crashes after building a number (more than 5-7) of reports in terminal server.

Can some one tell us that this will be fixed in the new release?

Found one more...

When one or more people connect into the machine Via Terminal Server and open the console and look at custom alerts, it freezes the polling and stops updating the data in the charts and database. A restart of Perfmon is needed to resume updating. it appears that the polling never stops just the updating of the data for traffic. All other functions were operational.

From the two bullets I quote here, it looks like you are still using the version shipped on 12/15/2006. Please look at the Help-About for System Manager - it should list the version as "Orion Version 8.0.1 - December 2006" if you have installed the version shipped on 1/2/2007.

We will look into the other problems you report here.

We are using 8.0.1 shipped on 1/2/2007, the about box says Orion Version 8.0.1 - December 2006
System Manager Version 8.0.113
Engine 8.0.72
and I have also found that we still have the same problem with the Custom MIB Poller. You can view the GET response upon set up, but it will not write to the table.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing the advanced alerts just mysteriously stop working consistently. I've contacted support about this and they said they will touch base once they have something to report.

The alerting engine issues are the only thing stopping us from upgrading at this point.

Does GET NEXT populate the database correctly?

Yes GET NEXT does populate the fields correctly - when get next is supported. The problem seems to only occur when trying to get the data from a table, I can get the first value using GET NEXT, but I can not get any values after that.

I just got the latest release from sales and still have the same issues, now the poller is stopping. I am going back to 7.8.5 until this blows over.

With respect to the advanced alerts issue you are having, could you provide a bit more information. We are unable to reproduce this issue. I am interested to know what the specific were for your alert. especially the frequency of the trigger, as well as, the action. Also, if you could let me know how long the alert was not working for, that would help us to track down this issue.

Stephen, I am having trouble reproducing what you are seeing. Some questions to help narrow this down:

Did you install 8.0.1 over the top of 8.0, or was this a clean install?
What OID is not working for SNMP Get?
What is the file size and Modified date of C:\program files\SolarWinds\Orion\OrionCustomPollingService.exe?

I'm trying to get data from a temperature probe with 2 sensors. The OID for sensor 1 is 1.3.6.1.4.1.13045.1.1.2.2.1.4.1 the OID for sensor 2 is 1.3.6.1.4.1.13045.1.1.2.2.1.4.2. If I use SNMP GET when I test both MIBS I get the correct value- of let's say 68, but on the web site it gives a value of 0. (this is the same for both sensors)
If I use SNMP GET NEXT and use the OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.13045.1.1.2.2.1.4 (note the .1 is missing from the end) I can get the value of the first temp probe (1.3.6.1.4.1.13045.1.1.2.2.1.4.1) without any problems, but I am unable to get the value for sensor 2 (1.3.6.1.4.1.13045.1.1.2.2.1.4.2) using this method.

One issue I found with advanced alerts is that if you use semi-colons to seperate email addresses, the emails will not send out.

We've been looking into this one, and it seems to be a different issue than the one we fixed in 8.0.1. It may be MIB-specific.

We recommend that anyone with Custom MIB polling problems call Support.

Can you provide us with a network trace filtered to the polling engine and the device? This will allow us to verify the correct SNMP request/response dialog. Can you also send us the SolarWinds event log?

Auto-arrange is broken in map maker. If you try to auto arrange you get everything put in a block formation, no matter what formation you select.

Nice catch jbdorsey, I was wondering why I wasn't getting emails this morning after having upgraded last night. The funny thing is at least in Outlook, the email to field still shows semicolons between email addresses.

Another issue I'm having with Advanced Alerts is that the 'From E-mail Account' section in the 'Edit E-mail/Page Action' seems to be ignored. All email I've gotten from v8.0.1 Advanced Alerts shows up with a from email address of the first address in the Email Recipients list. If I change the first email address in the list, the email appears to be from a different address....but it's consistently the first address in the recipient list.

This is not a problem for alerts I have configured with the Basic alert engine...those emails still appear from whatever I set in the alert.

This is important b/c I don't want alerts to show up looking like they're from me, but rather from the Orion server. It will get confusing when I send regular business email to the same people.

jkopko - what I did as a work around is put what I want the from address to be as the 'to:' line and moved my actual to reciepients to my cc line.

I am a HUGE SolarWinds fan but Advanced Alerting Engine is a total piece of garbage. For reasons I can't explain and don't understand can not get the Alerting Engine to work consistently at all. We have servers going down, drives filling up, CPU's running at 100% but nothing triggers...Then one day it starts working for a few hours or a day and then back to nothing. We have been loyal SolarWinds customers for years but the product is not doing what it was purchased to do, alert us of trouble before the end users do. I have opened up several cases with support, none of which have gotten me anywhere. At the suggestion of support I was told to break my alerts down into one trigger condition per alert rule, resulting in just over 100 alert rules. This was HOURS of work and didn't help the problem at all. Something stinks in the Advanced Alerting Engine and I don't know what it is. I am willing to work with Support again provided they have some meaningful suggestions/workarounds but unless we hear something positive on the Advanced Alert problem we will continue shopping for a Orion replacement.

I apologize if I seem like a hysteric but this should never have existed in the final release. I made Solarwinds aware of the problem when it was the Alert Engine Beta under 7.x, and then again under Orion 8 beta but I was simply told "It's beta don't expect it to work" so I accepted that and hoped that the final release would solve all of my problems but it didn't.. The Advanced alerts still don't work with any degree of consistency.

I have problems with the advanced alerts for a long time, but solarwinds finally give me the solution. I don`t know if it`s going to work for other people but maybe help someone.

For starters please make sure that .Net Framework 2.0 is installed on this machine. If so, please make sure that DNS and WINS are both configured properly on this server. If this is good, please disable NetBIOS over TCP if it is not needed. Then disable the WinHTTP Proxy Service. It will be set for manual start, but just disable it as this is the best route to resolve this issue. If it still will not start after making these changes, please add the following entries to your Hosts file:

127.0.0.1 wpad
127.0.0.1 CRL.THAWTE.COM
The Hosts file is located in System32/drivers/Etc.

My problem was with the advanced alert service engine, the service stops working after a while and never works again, until I made the entry in the host file.

What do the host file entries have to do with the Alerting Engine? I'm so confused. Even the DNS/WINS stuff doesn't make sense. I don't question that this solved your problem, but I'm trying to understand the “why/how”. What does name resolution, and certificate revocation have to do with the Advanced Alerting Engine?

It's interesting to know that I was provided with the same recommendation by SW support, even though my problem is that the SW services are not running except NPM. And my first response was why I need to change the host file to fix the problem. I'm still awaiting for clarification from support.

There is no explicit requirement for Orion to have internet access in order to start all the services properly. In our case Orion NPM is located in management LAN and does not have internet access. Threads from the forum tell a different story.

The quality of V8 is totally not within expectations.

They are not phoning home, they are contacting thawte.com to verify the certificate that the services were signed with.

Adding thawte.com to your hosts file and redirecting it to your loopback address (127.0.0.1) will allow the services to start.

We recognize that changing your hosts file is not a good long-term solution. We will be fixing this.

While fortunately this workaround fixes my problem, it would be nice to have this sort of "tricks" (bug patch) related to V8 posted by SW at a more official location where users can look for, and searchable. It will save users a lot of effort on the forum and confused by too much information.
