Monitoring on IBM Websphere MQ

I saw from the website that IBM Websphere can be monitored by using NPM or APM. For example, I would like to monitor the queue depth in a specific queue in MQ.

I have tried to use custom MIB but I don't know the OID. And I won't to use APM but really don't know how to kick start. Are there any templates for MQ can be shared by someone?

HI Nick--

Have you tried doing a MIB walk on your device to find the OID in question. There are several MIB walking applications available to do this.

Also, have you checked the APM area of the Content Exchange? Here' a link:

Actually I have tried to use different kind of MIB walker already but there are still no information for Websphere MQ.

For the APM, I have seen there are many people still finding the template for monitoring websphere MQ too. Howvever, there are still no solution right now....

Hi Nick--

I've let the product manager know about the APM info in your post so watch for his response.

Maybe the Websphere MQ item is not OID-able. Have you done a search and checked?

I think to monitor Websphere MQ with snmp you need an agent that's not built into WebSphere HQ... this is what IBM says about it:

www-01.ibm.com/.../docview.wss

I'd say this line sums it up out of the box:

MQ does not provide native support for SNMP

Also this is enlightening... substitute NPM for Netview below:

"A number of vendors have produced MIBs for MQ, such as Nastel as part of MQControl. Defining the MIB is not hard but writing the agent is the complex part. The MIB just defines the interface to the agent and tells products like Netview what your agents supports. A simple agent could take our events and convert them to SNMP traps. An agent which allowed commands would be much more complicated.
We have stated that MQ will not be providing an SNMP agent as our vendors have already done it.
The agent itself is really only the start."

It appears that IBM MQ Series does not provide native support for SNMP. What things do you want to monitor on IBM MQ Series and what platform is it running? If it's running on Windows, you can use performance counter monitors and scripts. If it's running on Unix/Linux, you can use the Unix/Linux script monitor to gather performance data. You might also set up an SQL query monitor to run against the IBM MQ Series DB to understand DB health.

Thanks for the reply. My concept is as same as Chris. I wrote some vbscript to call some remote procedure for the MQ server in order to achieve the result. So the APM license will be counted per scipt, right?

And as I know some vendors/companies that I meet before seems can tackling the issue by using SNMP... but I don't know and really interested in how can they achieve this...
