Putting the SW Database in the Cloud and the Main Poller in the Datacenter

Hello,

I am not sure if this is possible, but I want to place the SolarWinds DB in the Azure cloud and place our Main Poller in our Datacenter. Is it possible to have them split up like that? What type of connectivity would I need. I have around 700 Devices.

While it is technically possible, please note that the design information requires a very low level of latency between the primary poller and the database. So you have to be VERY confident that you can maintain latency under 100ms (that's my own personal number. YMMV, caveate emptor, etc etc) before settling on this design.

Probably the #1 biggest complaint among everyone here is DB performance. Just a few years ago support required a physical SQL server, preferably with fiber channel attached storage. Recently, virtual SQL servers have been caught up and can perform very well, so they are now supported. You are now asking if a remotely attached SQL server will work, I'm assuming since you don't have enough local resources for a new DB. I can't, and won't, say it won't work...but I will say based on all the performance issues I've personally experienced and assisted with on this forum, expect poor performance and hope there isn't. Have a Plan B in case you do have performance issues.

All that said, you have a very small (700 device) environment, and depending on how much is being collected, you might be fine initially until your environment grows.

You might be better off putting your Primary Polling Engine in the Cloud as well to reduce the latency between your MPE and DB, then use APE's to poll the on-prem DC.
