Alert Engine Service - Disabled

I'm not sure if anyone else sees these but I've been noticing something when I install patches. I just installed SP3 and noticed that after the installation the Alert Engine service is set for disable. I have to go in, change it to automatic, and start the service. I've seen this before and thought it was a fluke but I had the same issue again.

Hi Bryan,

I believe in either SP2 or SP3, the service was reconfigured so that it would be 'disabled' on all the polling engines, and only active on the primary machine with system manager. It was noted in the change log with whatever SP made the change.

Is it starting as 'disabled' on your main box as well?

From the change log for SP3, referring to items changed in previous service packs (SP1 or SP2):

- The Alerting Engine service is now disabled by default on the Hot Standby, Additional Website, and Additional Poller installs to reduce database contention

I have 4 remote pollers that do all the work...so does the alert engine need to run on those? The main NPM server just runs the web site. I have basic alerts on the pollers.

Nope. The only alert engine that matters is the one of the main server
