Syslog Service

I'm using Orion 7.7. I believe I have the syslog server installed, but when I run the SysLog server viewer there's no messages. I've done things which ought to have sent syslog messages but nothing is appearing.

I should note that before I installed Orion, I was using the syslog server in the Engineers Toolset, and this received the messages fine (it is of course not running currently !!).

My problem is how do I determine if the syslog server is really running. I can't seem to find a specific service for it on my windows system and don't know if it's just a part of the NPM service.

Ah, as always, half an hour after posting the question, the answer comes to light. In case it's useful to anybody else:

1. The service name is 'SolarWinds Syslog Service' (and no, I did not have it installed, though not sure why as I did select it during the installation and configuration).

2. The great utility called 'StopNetPerfMon.exe' in the 'c:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Network Performance Monitor V7' directory helped me out. This utility does a bit more than its name implies: it shows all the Solarwinds related services, if they are installed or running (or not) and gives the opportunity to stop, start, install or uninstall each service. I simply installed and started the syslog service from here and it's all working ok.

I also had a problem with the syslog service.
I wasn't able to start it inside the services control panel of windows.
I always got the error:
The SolarWinds Syslog Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

After using StopNetPerfMon.exe I was able to start the service ( I first did an uninstall and a reinstall of the service )

I had and have been having that problem with the Syslog service not starting sometimes. Seems that for some reason the syslog service wants to be able to access the internet when it starts - Solarwinds told me it only needs to do this once on installation - but I've found that the agents on the servers also seem to do this on restart.

We found that since we were behind an internet proxy that it failed to connect sometimes because of the funky way windows now works with the WinHTTP setup on XP and Win2k3 where it can have different settings that your IE.

If you're behing an internet proxy try issuing the "proxycfg -u" command on the dos prompt of your boxes that run the syslog service - this forces your current IE settings for your proxy to be transfered to the WinHTTP service. This has fixed the problem anytime I've ever seen it.

After reading your message below I had hope, but it was not to be. I have the SW Syslog Service installed, but it will not start. It also will not uninstall so that I may reinstall it. Do you have any other suggestions. BTW, we just upgraded to Orion NPM v8.0.1 to try and solve this problem. Any suggestions? Should we go back to v7?
