Confused over which products to buy
skot
Hi all,
I'm convinced that SolarWinds is the right product for us, after seeing it running at a customer, and looking at some of the info on this site.
I'm still confused, though, over which products I need to buy.
What I need is a pretty map showing lots of (hopefully!) green and some orange and some red stuff. Then I'd like to be able to drill down to these and figure out what's going wrong.
I'm looking for link response data from (primarily) HP and Cisco PIX managed links, which I think the core product can cope with.
Nice-to-haves would be threshold data from Windows and UNIX servers (I can use syslog or SNMP if required) and the ability to tickle a port on a given device. For example; if port 1433 is accepting connections on a specific server then the SQL Server is probably still alive.
Oh, and I'd like to trigger external events (incident logging into out service management tool) when things go pear-shaped.
Can I do all this with the core product or do I need to buy these "engineer" products?
Thanks in anticipation,
Scott

Hey Scott - Welcome to the World of Solarwinds!
Orion with the Application Monitoring add-on can do all the thing's you mentioned, except for "tickling" the port on your servers. It will tell you the process is running on your server, but doesn't actually poll the port over the network.
Currently Solarwinds does not have a monitoring product that can do this.
There is a port scanner in the Eng. Edition, but it must be run manually.
