How to protect a remote NPM installation?

Hello,

is there a way to protect a NPM servefr from a remote location over a WAN link?

I have seen that the Failover Engine is not the right solution because it's essentially clone-based, with the primary and secondary server directly connected via a crossover cable.

Can I use the Hot Standby for this purpose?

Any suggestion or link to the right document will be very apreciated.

the hot standby engine is no longer developed, I believe NPM v10.0 is the latest supported version.

the Failover Engine does not need to be connected via crossover cable, that is one possibility (where the FoE server would take the same IP as the original one) but you can also use it across WAN-links with different IPs. that way the FoE would take over whenever you want (lots of settings, if you want it can take over if the primary stops polling or is not reachable anymore, etc.)

The point is that the customer just bought a two years active mantainance for the Hot Standby Engine.

Moreover he would to realize a distributed monitoring system over WAN links because his network is very wide with a lot of remote offices.

At this point the better solution for investment protection would be using the Hot Standby.

Does Hot Standby support this configuration (apart the fact that is not more developed)?

If not, can the FOE do the job?

Regardless of the chosen solution, can a NPM distributed monitoring system over WAN links be an effective and functional solution?

Hi,

maybe if you talk to customer support and explain your situation they can work out an adequate solution for the customer. The HotStandby Engine only includes the basic NPM module and is not as advanced as the failover engine, however it does give a limited possibility to "fail over", also it cannot do distributed monitoring, neither can the FoE though. For this you would need additional pollers (they require a poller license, although not very cheap for small remote offices).

"Regardless" Orion can perform adequate, effective, functional and distributed monitoring over WAN links. it just might be cost intensive if you want it to be distribted (hopefully there will be a solution for this sometime). The failover engine is only if you want a highly available monitoring system and/or for disaster recovery purposes.

Why dont you try calling Solarwinds, ask for a presentation together with a technician, you can fire away your questions and requirements and they can be answered quickly. ;-)

The point is that the customer just bought a two years active mantainance for the Hot Standby Engine.

For customers that had the HSE and are on active maintenance we offered them a deal to get them an upgrade path. If your customer did not get this, send me a note or let me know.

If you check out here you can find the documentation on the Failover Engine where it discusses the deployment options.

This product is designed to work in a local LAN setup (high availability) or across a WAN connection (disaster recovery) setup. With the launch of 10.1 we EOL the Hot Standby Engine. Due to some other backend changes it will not work with 10.1.
