Can I specify the thin clients I want to monitor?

I work for a branch location. I am currently monitoring one of the wireless controller that HQ controls.

Hundreds of APs are associated with this controller, though only a third belong to our location. Can I specify which APs I'd like to receive alerts on? Or create a dashboard only monitoring a select few?

You can setup alerts with some simple Trigger filtering on names / IP as David mentions.

I recall a similar question not too long ago.

I think that thread said that as long as APs are not classified as nodes and not open to have custom proprieties this may not be possible. But I'd like to see if there is a new or correct answer to this. I would like to know too.

Thanks for the tip. I tried searching before posting but could not find this question asked previously. I will see about getting creds added to the APs to add them individually as nodes.

Yeah....

I remember a similar situation posed, who knows if it was a thread derail or other topic that got mixed.

I just remember realizing from that thread that APs weren't very customizable or able to receive a custom property. So to that end, we rely on a customer code for the Controllers for individual customers get only their devices in dashboards, but we cannot go one level deeper and segregate APs easily, which I believe is what you are wanting.

You'll probably find it helpful to plan out that kind of monitoring in advance and setting aside one or more SSID's to dedicate to the sites you wish monitored. Then discover those nodes automatically, or import them into NPM if you've forced them to have specific IP addresses.

Knowing what you'll want to do with NPM in the future is the key to determining how you'll implement a network today.

This is assuming HQs care about my monitoring, which they don't! I don't have any influence in their decision making, unfortunately.

Same IP pool...same SSID... the only differentiator is the IP space of the APs themselves.

When you monitor the Controller you will be able to discover all AP's associated with that controller. You could then filter your widget and associated alerts to only notify you about AP's in a specific IP range, but that is assuming the AP's in your location all have the same subnet.

You can also filter on a Node custom property that ties to the Controller - doesn't help you though, but its nice to see these options open up for me anyway.

So in my case, I have Customer CP at the Controller level that filters down to the APs.
