Has anyone ever run the additional Web server on their SQL server? Management just ask me if this was possible.

I've never considered running the additional web server on the SQL server. Our current environment has the Orion database on a shared SQL server with a couple dozen other databases. Management wants to move our Orion environment out of our campus datacenter to a new colo space (Orion server, 2 additional pollers, and then install a dedicated SQL server just for the Orion database.) Our current database runs a little over 32 gigs and we're running the IPAM module as well as the NTA module with about 1000 source interfaces. I'm not a DBA and haven't really done anything on a SQL server since SQL 2000, so I thought I'd ask the community if there are any issues running the additional Web server, IIS, the .Net framework, etc. on a SQL 2005 server. I haven't seen the specs of the server they are considering using for the SQL box but it will be physical, not virtual. We normally have around 10 - 12 users logged in at any given time during business hours. Any input from the community and/or SW staff would be greatly appreciated.

A better solution would probably to use the Additional Web Server on a VM. You're playing with fire putting it on the SQL box.

Unfortunately, this colo space is new and doesn't have any ESX servers in place to host a VM nor is there any available budget to add an ESX server anytime soon. So, our options are to either leave the additional web server on it's current VM in the datacenter and see if we experience a performance hit after moving the Orion servers or try to run it from the SQL box. We've got a gig connection between the datacenter and the colo space so I'm hoping we'll be ok. We're really just looking for a plan B if we have issues running the additional web server from the datacenter.
