We created a script that got that info via snmp and populated the custom field for us. That was the easiest way we could think of.

Could you post the script
Thanks

Sure, but it's a perl script that uses open snmp. We have a linux box that we run in conjunction with our solarwinds that allows us to enable or shut ports on campus and also populates what mac addresses and IP addresses are on each switchport. We have almost 15,000 ports on campus here. Lemme grab the script for ya. Basically, we populate a MySQL db with the info and then throw it from there into the MSSQL netperfmon database.

Well thank you, I am also interested in doing what you are with populating switchport, mac, etc to a database. perhaps you could elaborate on the way you have it set-up. Sounds like you have things pinned down pretty good. Do you also use authenticated DHCP/Net Registar in your environment?

I used the Solarwinds SNMP Excel plug-in to grab the serial numbers using the Professional Edition toolset.
I exported all my IPs & SNMP community strings from Orion, threw them into the spreadsheet & let it run for 30-40 minutes. Save it as a .csv file & import back into Orion.
CeClark has the ultimate solution in this post, although this would take a bit more work to implement at first.

We use CCA in the dorms, but the campus doesn't use registration........yet
We are re-writing the script now so the switches will send a trap when a mac address change is detected. We tried this before, but some of the switches (4500's) didn't support it. For now, we poll every 30 minutes. We are changing to traps and polling only the 4500's every 30 minutes. I forgot to post the code yesterday, sorry
Got excited about leaving for the day. Give me a sec.....
