Has anyone installed and not had problems?
I'm ready to upgrade (from 8.1) but I've yet to read anything that said the upgrade went smoothly. I have no desire (or time) to mess around with fixing it.

My upgrade from 8.5 to 8.5.1 went smoothly. No issues.
I think what you're discovering is that no one starts a new thread to tell everyone how successful their installation was. Forums are usually the place where people post about their problems looking for help. I would wager that the overwhelming majority of people who upgraded to 8.5.1 did so with great success. What you're seeing in the forums are the small percentage of people that ran into problems for one reason or another.
Alterego makes a great point that is generally true of Forums everywhere, not just SolarWinds.
While you might not consider me a credible source, I can tell you this: We know how many customers have downloaded, and we know how many Support tickets and Thwack posts we get. Without going into details, I can say that these data tell me that the vast majority of customers aren't having issues significant enough to lead them to reach out to us.

I successfully upgraded from 8.1 -> 8.5.1 without any problems. I initially stated this in the following post:
We've also done the 8.5 -> 8.5.1 upgrade without any problems... It actually solved one of the two problems we've had which have been stopping us from moving this tool into production for three months.
The thought that people don't post the good news had occurred to me as well.
Is the recommended path 8.1 >> 8.5 >> 8.5.1 or is it 8.1 >> 8.5.1. I believe it's the latter but just want to confirm.

From what I have seen, you are right, it is the latter.
I would strongly recommend 8.1 (or 8.0 or 7.8.5) straight to 8.5.1. There's no value in the intermediate step.
I upgraded form 8.1 to 8.5.1 this morning and everything worked great. I had some errors unregistering some .dll files when it was uninstalled 8.1 but the 8.5.1 install still went fine and everything started working again without an issue. It took about 20 minutes to do the upgrade, including the .NET 3.0 install.

Curious, what were those problems?
I'm running 8.1 as well & and am having problems.I believe they might be related to permissions when installing the app.
All this worked fine in 8.1 when it was running on my 4 year old server, but since separating the DB & moving SLX to a new poller, it broke.The biggest difference is the old server used a local admin account for installation. Now both servers are in a different domain with non-local admin accounts. I think I need to right click & select "run as" on the install program & allow the program to install with full admin rights.Let me know how your upgrade goes Chris, & I might take the plunge to 8.5.1 SP1 as well.I'm especially interested in any loss in your customizations.
