Orion/NPM - Why upgrade to Server 2016/SQL 2016?

On my last update to NPM it said that I would have to upgrade my server OS and SQL Server version if I wanted any additional updates to the product. Did I read this wrong? We are running Server 2012 and SQL. Is it a functionality issue in future updates? This is going to cause some issues in getting approval for an additional spend just to keep versions updated.

NPM 12.4 requires Windows 2016.

Latest NCM requires Windows/SQL 2016.

I understand NPM requires it with the latest update, my question is really WHY? What is the reasoning?

mainly because certain new features are based around what sql 2016+ Index Technology.

Google the requirements for NTA or Log Manager for Orion you will find more deep explanation.

So I got a brief explaination from the Technical Support team and it is around API's that are new to Windows Server 2016 and new indexing and other features in SQL 2016/2017. I am good with the SQL but it is a large spend on 2016 on a VMWare installation or even for a bare metal box that is going to give me some sort of improvements?
