Upgrade and Server Change

I have a running orion NPM

Running system

SQL 2000
1. Polling Engine (Engine Version 8.0.72 - Orion Version 8.0.1) & NPM on a Server 2003 (Orion Network Performance Monitor V8.0 SLX 8.0.67)
2. Polling Engine (Engine Version 8.1.3 - Orion Version 8.1.0) on a separate Server 2003

Now I like to change the servers and do a Upgrade while holding the interrupt as short as possible

I will migrate this system to 2008 servers and to the most up to date 10 NPM Version
SQL 2008
1. Polling Engine & NPM on a 2008 Server
2. Polling Engine on a 2008 Server

My question is, what is the fastest way (with the shortest interrupt) to get there?

I recommend treating it as a few separate projects/steps.

first upgrade to the newest version (I think you will need to upgrade twice 8.x to 9.x to 10.x) on both old servers, let that sit a bit and work out any issues, then move the DB, wait a couple days (there shouldn't be any issues), then move a poller, wait, then the main (or vise-versa). You could even re-organize so the move change of pollers might not even cause an outage (but that might be more trouble than it's worth).

The upgrade is the one that might be the most trouble, check your syslog; if there is a lot of data in there, one of the upgrades might take a long time. Read the release notes, I think it addresses some of the possible pain points

that will be multiple outages, but each one will be shorter and troubleshooting any issues that might arise will be easier and quicker to resolve.

I assume you have active maintenance? In the customer portal there is an upgrade document which helps guide you through upgrading from previous versions and then steps you will need to take in upgrading. You will also need to call Support and get the downloads to the versions you will have to use to stair step upgrade to 10.1.2

Will a upgrade to 9.5.1 and then to 10 work, when the db on the old system is running on a sql 2000?

No. that will not work. NPM 10.0 requires SQL Server 2005. The Upgrade Instructions (Customer Portal > License Management > Orion Network Performance Monitor vX) will provide guidance on requirements for both your Orion server and you database (SQL) server.

Ah! Then maybe your first step would be to migrate the database, then upgrade App, then move App to new server. (I only say to move to the new server last because you will have a clean App/Web server in the end).
