Server spec help for 2000 nodes?

Hello,

We need to buy a server to house our Orion Solarwinds installation. We have a unlimited license and will have around 2000-2500 nodes (servers, routers, switches etc). We will poll every 1min and collect stats every 1 min and keep data for 12 mins on a SQL 2005/2008 backend.

What spec would you suggest? CPU, MEM, Disk space, etc?

Each Solarwinds server that has the task to be a poller (does just what it sounds like it does) can poll max about 8k "elements". They all report back to the main server. But if you just had 2000 elements based off of 2000 nodes give or take 1 server should do it.

I think the bigger question is how many elements you will have. That being a total of all the interfaces and items you would monitor. From that point they recommend no more than 8k elements per poller meaning you my need more than 1 box especially if you plan on running more modules like netflow.

It would be 2000 servers and workstations CPU, MEM, Drive space, switches we would need to know if the ports were up or down.

You would use the Orion Enterprise Operations Console

I would think we would have about 10-12k of elements being polled every 5mins (just found out), based on this what would we need.

You mention polling servers can these be on any server? Then report back to the Orion server?

Or would I need 2 Orion servers with the unlimited license on each? Could you provide a simple setup based on 10-12k of elements? I'm only used to 2k of elemnts on one server
