SMTP Alerts Errors

When the Alerts Actions are set to e-mail with the internal SMTP server address (both DNS and IP) the error log has the entry:-

The transport failed to connect to the server Error Number--2147220973

Anyone got any ideas?

*Anti Virus is not blocking port 25
*SMTP Server allows the solarwinds server IP to connect, and other applications are sending via SMTP from the same server
*The alerts did work but have recently stopped, but there is no SMTP authentication required (even whn I put something in there I get the same error)

All help would be appreciated.

Can you successfully connect via telnet from SW server to the smtp server on port 25?

Yes - tried that can can execute helo command..

All working now - not that I had many suggestions!! ;o) Don't know if a Solarwinds bug but when you test the alert it generates log entry saying failed to connect bu tin live environment it works fine. odd.
