Web Interface is painfully slow!

Hi - I am trying a demo copy of Orion NPM with Netflow and Application addons installed.

The web interface of Orion is extremely slow. The password page comes up quickly but after I enter my password it takes anywhere from 25 to 35 seconds for the Network Summary home page to load. Also clicking on the Application Performance Monitor, Netflow Traffic Analysis, or Home page takes about 30 seconds to load as well (other links are relatively fast).

I am only monitoring 17 network devices total.

Here is the software I have installed:

NPM v9.0 SP2

Netflow 3.0 SP4

APM 2.0 SP1

SQL v5 express (the one that came with Orion) is installed locally.

Here are my server specs:

Windows 2003 Server with SP2

Dual XEON 2.4GHZ each.

4 gig Ram with 2+ gig free

RAID-5 array with 100gigs free disk space

Any thoughts?

Nick,

To remove items from your home page, just go to the Admin section of the web console and select Manage Views. Find the view for your home page in the list of views, highlight it and click the edit button. This will allow you to add or remove resources from the column(s) of that page.

We have this same problem on the NPM 9 SP1 running the SQL Express on the same server.

On a different server where the SQL is on a different server it works fine.

The Slowness of the Website can be attributed to many factors: Speed between the SQL Server and Orion, How many resources are on the Website itself, Resources of the Server are unusually high.

The Way our Website works is this:

You request to open the web page; Orion Server Queries the SQL Server with all required queries, SQL Server responds back to Orion Server IIS, IIS packages and displays on the Website, Most of the Time the SQL Server may be the bottleneck.

If you have SQL Express, it caps the RAM out at 1GB, also we always recommend that all customers who have NetFlow to have a Separate server for SQL, and that they have the Database on a RAID 10 setup.

**If you want to have a lot of resources for your users, move all of the resources from the Home Page to a new Page. Remember if you have 50 users, they have to access The Home Page each time before they do anything. Best Practices show that by having only active Alerts and maybe an Overall Network Map.**

The more resources, the more Orion has to query from the SQL Server. Your site will timeout if you have too many resources.

We also have a white paper on the Chart and Data Gaps, which is usually the first sign that something that may be slowing Orion down, or that Orion cannot process all of the data: www.solarwinds.com/.../gaps.htm

Thanks for the reply Sean.

I do have the SQL on the same box, but considering I only have 17 nodes total (and only 3 of which are sending netflow data) I would think my server is beefy enough to handle, no?

The last place I worked had over 500 nodes in Orion and SQL was running on the same box and it was still 10x faster than this.

Also how do I go about moving resources from the home page?

You guys led me to the solution...

It seems that Orion attempts to connect to the Thwack site prior to loading the home page.

My Orion server does not have internet access, thus the Thwack query times out.

Once I removed Thwack from my home page view it cut the page load time from 30 seconds down to 5 seconds.

I then removed the network map which I am not using and it cut the page load to less than 3 seconds.

Yes I side with Neil, we are having extremely slow performance serving up the login page but then it's not so bad. As well, after the login page is retreived it is not slow afterwards. It sound like a cache issue. Is there something in the IIS that could be slowing it down? This would appear to be a timing issue similar to reverse DNS but we do not have DNS enabled on any of the interfaces on the box.

NPM 9.1 SP1 SLX with CM 5.0 DL500 with separate SQL 2005 standard server

If anyone could help detail what I should be looking at it would be of great help.
