Still confused about adding community strings to a node

I am al little confused about what actually happens when I try to add a new SNMP string to a node that is already in Orion.

Say I have a node that is in the Orion DB with a RO string, and now I want to add a RW string to that same node. Do I merely add the RW string under Node Management in the Read/Write Community String field? If I Validate, is it validating on the RW string or the RO string or both?

Oh, one other question. If I want to "promote" an ICMP node to SNMP, do I need to add it again, or can I simply add the RO string to the existing node?

Yes, this should work fine.

You do not need to re-add the node.  Just go edit the node and make it an SNMP node and add your RO string and you should be good.
