Orion Website Errors

I've been working with Orion support for a while now regarding an issue I have been having with a failure of the website. I'm about to give up because nobody seems to know how to resolve this issue. I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on this situation.

Every once and a while I lose maps and reports. There is no pattern to this loss of funcationality as it is sporatic. There are no logs that report any errors that might cause this to happen, and I have yet to reason why it happens so randomly. Although it would appear that it might have to do with permissions, this cannot be the case as I have verified this time and time again.

Below is a "Good" picture (left) representing what it should look like, and a "Bad" (right)picture which represents the problem as it is occuring.

The only way to resolve the problem and get it back to "Good" is by recreating the website.

I am currently running Orion 8.5.1 with 439 nodes.

This issue has existed before 8.5 - no updates have helped.

Has anyone seen this issue before? I have run out of ideas.

Given the error message, I'd be curious to see what a process monitor trace reveals when the website attempts to read the file at C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Orion\Maps\Arkansas.OrionMap. It would at least reveal whether or not the error message is a red herring.

I would check (if you haven't already) the usual suspects:

- Directory permissions
- File permissions

Also, have you tried creating a new map and putting that up as another resource on the page just for testing purposes?

Glad it's not only me....I thought it was due to the number of nodes I have on the map (1500+). The only way I've be able to resolve it is running the config. wizard, website only,...but as you said it eventually breaks again.

I have 7.8.5 and it does that occasionally, but on the next refresh it returns to normal. My only thinking is that during the refresh not all the files needed for the page are being loaded, that there is some kind of server delay. It doesnt happen that often, and usually a refresh or reload of the page brings it all back.

I can't find any indication that there are failures at a read level as indicated by the "Cannot load..." error. Something interesting to note is that on occasion that "Cannot load..." error appears on a refresh and goes away upon next refresh. It almost resembles a timing issue in that at times there is a delay and errors occur, but remain self correcting - other times the error causes Orion to hangup.

There are no indications that permissions are creating the issue, however the "new map resource" idea might be helpful in an effort to pinpoint the problem. It is interesting though that the only resources that have problems are the ones referenced from the Solarwinds directory and not Inetpub.

Due to many modifications within the PHP and resource architechure it is becoming very inconvenient to have to reinstall the website and rewrite over all modifications. Of course a quick overwrite will suffice - it still remains an inconvience.

I've seen something similar, whereby some resources would suddenly fail to display, display incorrectly/partially, or an error message would be displayed in its place. I've experienced this with both 7.8.5 and 8.5.1. In my case, it appeared to be related to a memory leak in the website. Once the memory consumption reached a certain amount, these symptoms would sporadically start to appear. The way I resolve it is to use the "Orion Service Manager" to unload the Orion Com+ Application.
