Wan uplinks and percent utitlization

Hello Everyone

We have SolarWinds NPM and NTA deployed which is monitoring all of our WAN uplinks on Cisco layer 3 switches. The uplinks are set to 100 mg full and SolarWinds of course calculates percentage of bandwidth used by how much of that 100 mg is being used. Most of these circuits are between 20 mg and 60 mg. How do we tell SolarWinds what the max bandwidth of each circuit is?

I like the idea of setting this in the switches. Currently we are not using L3 switches for QOS. We tag our traffic at the client and server level and our ISP prioritizes by how we tag the traffic. The reason I bring this up is because our 3750x do not have MLS enabled. Is this bandwidth command passive? Meaning does it actually cap the bandwidth or does it is just report what the max bandwidth is?

For multiple Interfaces can go under Settings> Manage Nodes, select the Interfaces, and select Edit Properties, or under Interface Details select Edit Properties. In the edit screen you can set the custom bandwidth to the reported interface speed.

Once it's submitted, it will take 2 polling cycles for the new bandwidth utilization percentages to be seen.

There are 3 methods I use for this functionality:

sean.martinez‌ describes one method by which you manually modify the interfaces discovered by NPM.
Cisco CLI command "bandwidth" This is my preferred method because the "bandwidth" command is also used by QoS to determine queuing percentages. And when I increase/decrease the circuit speed, NPM rediscovers the new settings at the next discovery poll. This reduces the chance of forgetting to change NPM when I change circuit size.
Cisco CLI commands "bandwidth" and "bandwidth receive" These are used for the same reason as explained in #2, but these are used on GRE Tunnel interfaces.

I prefer to make my changes on the monitored devices as much as possible. That way I don't have to remember to change NPM or any other monitoring tool.

I just looked it up and it looks like the bandwidth command is totally passive and can be used whether QOS is being used or not.

Correct, it only manipulates traffic priority queues "if" L3 QoS is configured.

Incidentally, if you decide in the future to configure QoS, shaping is the preferred method for ethernet interfaces. (lesson learned the hard way )
