NPM VM Discovery

I ran a discovery on a Vcenter Node and it discovered all the ESX servers and their associated VM's.

Can someone tell me how NPM knows when a server is a VM box when SNMP is not enabled.

My understanding is it works with the VMWARE api.Any information or If you can supply a link to how it this process works I would appreciate it.

NPM uses Virtualization module (VIM) to discover Vmware nodes. VIM gets data about virtualization infrastructure (ESX, clusters, VMs, ...) via Vmware API.
