Need a reference document for optimizing SQL Serve rfor SolarWinds!!

I am facing the prospect of installing MS SQL Server 2008 with no input from a SQL guru. I want to make sure I get all of the various settings correct for use with SolarWinds applications.Does anyone know of a good document that I can use as a checklist? Ideally, the reference would cover not only SQL installation, but then also deal with the specifics of optimizing SQL for the SolarWinds database.

I would appreciate any help very much.

One thing I always tell people is to make sure you limit SQL's memory usage. If the server has 16GB of RAM, limit SQL to 15 (or 14) - if the OS has to fight to run TCP/IP, Server, LSASS, or anything else, then it doesn't matter that how much faster SQL is because it took 1/2 GB more.

Run simple recovery mode - unless you are currently doing something with the logs, if you plan to do it in the future, do it then, it's like 30 seconds to change it to full (and that includes stumbling around the right click menu).

Don't skimp on the disk... heck SSD isn't that expensive any more.

None of this is exclusive to Solarwinds, just SQL in general - I'll leave that to a SW employee to answer.

My personal biggest hurdle has been spindles. If we are not using a storage array and using local disk the more spindles (and the faster RPM) the better. In the large enterprise networks I have monitored disk IO has been my number 1 bottleneck.
