OT: Application Performance Monitoring

I am searching for software to monitor and help debug Application issues and or bottlenecks with the network. Something that will tell me if an application is slow because of a network problem, server problem or application. I have checked out NetQos and it is very nice but very pricey, for us anyway.

Some of you have to be using something, so if you don't mind sharing I would appreciate it and also if you like it or not.

Hello darader,

beside Orion we're running Compuware Network, - and ClientVantage. NetworkVantage is PC based, running something like a network sniffer, able to see all levels of the OSI. Nice feautures and very stable. This can be used to do a network analysis.
In addition there's ClientVantage, something like a "standard user robot", performing applications and its transactions in a given way, which has been scripted in a language close to VB.
ClientVantage is a little bit tricky, a lot of maintenance necessary to keep it up and running properly, but the results are very useful: you can see for each location ( where an agent / user robot ) is placed, when did what not work as supposed and why. Because with the acitve latency detection they're able to split the total time for each application in a C-N-S-Breakdown ( Client, Network, Server ) to split where the time is lost.

In alternative there's something from Concord in the ehealth suite, we tried one but it's tricky and seems not so good in reporting. And Mercury Interactive, their roots are in the testing environment, they are strong as well in the market, but we never tried that.

I've been looking at App monitoring software lately and as you said NetQos is pricey, the product I am probably going to be implementing is NETIQ Appmanager.

It does app monitoring right down to specfic scripts for apps ie monitoring citrix servers and connections stats and Exchange etc.

I'm not sure what I can reveal in terms of features it has implemented, and while I can't speculate on its future, the Orion Application Monitor is *very* promising. The caveat: It's still in beta, YMMV, and thus user-beware.
