writing custom resources

Question

Hi,

I'm after a feel of how common it is for users to write their own custom resources. the structure for them looks reasonable logical, and with a simple db schema would be a good way to get the view of the data that you need if it's not available by default, but how common a thing to do is this?

I'm with VH and NG.  I"ve customized some SQL and other things and that was the biggest draw for us to jump aboard Orion.  Any good system will allow customizations and upgrading will be somewhat painful in this aspect, but worth it in my book, because nothing out of the box fits anyones mold to a T.  Trick is to keep close track of what you do and save that off.

i get the impression that reading up on the DB schema's and such may be a big benefit to see what i could make it do for me... we need to be able to present happy face / sad face level details for a site for sub 1st-line IT and high level management, and there's not anythign i can see in orion currently able to do that, but with a bit of jiggling it seems doable. i guess the question is if starting of with a view to modify highlights a good or bad base product...

My comments mirror those of NG. One of the most appealing aspects of Orion is how receptive it is to customization. Though it requires some work to re-apply customizations following an upgrade, the benefits afforded by these modifications, and the associated increase in operational efficiency, more than makes up for the additional effort.
