How to check if your scheduler is overloaded?

Hi There,

We are currently getting the error message Connection timeout. Job canceled by scheduler. as mentioned in this KB article http://knowledgebase.solarwinds.com/kb/questions/3369/Error%3A+Connection+timeout.+Job+Canceled+by+scheduler. The first bullet point says to check and see if your scheduler is overloaded and correct if needed. Does anyone know how to check the scheduler to see if it is overloaded? What's more likely the cause of this error is that the timeout value for the template is simply too short. Try increasing the timeout value for the application by doubling the two highlighted values below from 300 to 600. If this resolves the issue then it's not a problem with an overloaded scheduler, but rather there's simply more being polled than can be reasonably returned in the time allotted.

Thanks, I've just updated the polling values, we'll see how it goes. In the event this doesn't work, is there an article or post somewhere outlining how to determine if the scheduler is overloaded and how to resolve if it is?

General way how to see if the scheduler is overloaded would be to have a look at CPU load on Orion box to see if CPU is maxed out or barely doing anything. This error could be caused by overloaded polling engine, but there can be also other reasons - like sometimes polling of Performance Counter data over WAN could be very time consuming. So the question would be - can you see this error only on certain applications or component monitors or does it randomly spread accross all applications? Are you monitoring systems in remote location (WAN)? What APM/SAM version are you running?
