How many of my interfaces are actually being used?

 Is there any way to generate a report of how many interfaces are active out of the total number of interfaces in a given time frame?  For instance, we would like to use Orion to help us determine our switch hardware needs in the future.  In the past we have had port-per-pillow, but since rolling out wireless to our campus, we have seen more users choosing to connect through AP's than on the wire.  This leaves us with a surplus of un-used expensive network interfaces on our switches.  We'd like to find out just how much of our wired infrastructure is now being accessed via wireless by finding out the number of un-used ports in a given week/month/year for planning of purchases down the line.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks for the help!

I understand what your trying to accomplish Here . What you really need is a list of all the interfaces on switches that are being Used and Visa Versa .Am i correct here ?

How you could achieve this is by ensuring that all your edge switches which users connect to are managed in Orion  system manager and that you select all of the interfaces to be managed. To  do this you would need to list resources on all switches and select all interfaces as opposed to just active. Orion will keep a list of them as up or down

Then use report writer to run the canned report on down interfaces. You can add your own filter (Eg per Node) to get a bit more granular

What i must ask you first though is  if your AP users also plug into the switch? Do they alternate between wireless and wired solution ?

You will get a better reflection of what switches you can consolidate if they were tied directly to the Wireless AP at all times. The Reports would then show you a true reflection of inactive ports.. I.e. the ports inactive consistently for one month would show you that no one has plugged in during that time period.
