METRO Ethernet interface speed

We have a METRO ethernet interface and I'm told it is 30Mbps. I've set this as the custom speed in Orion System Manager.

This interface continues to move up in speed, like 40Mbps and 70Mbps. Is this typical for these type interfaces or is the ISP doing some changes we don't know about?

Just curious if anyone else has had this experience.

If these charts are based off of the interface that you control, there may be periods where you will go well over your 30Mb CIR and since you aren't dropping the packets..the interface will show that they were sent fine. The ISP interface will show the drops and only allow 30Mb or a little above if bursting. My guess is the bursts you see of 70Mb for example are for short durations until the ISP starts dropping packets and then your TCP transmissions begin to throttle down. Unless you rate limit the interface to 30Mb you will see this type of reporting.

I can expect some plus/minus on extra ISP bandwidth like 39-41Mbps but when it got over 70Mbps that is when I begin to question what is going on here???

Does your ISP specify a burst speed? You could have 30 guaranteed with a burst allowed up to XXX Mbps

It would be interesting to see what the min/max/avg graph looks like for this interface. Can you post that?

We did hear back from our ISP and of course they said there can be short bursts over 30Mbps before packets start dropping. Hmmmm?
