Missing Polls

Has anyone experience problems where Orion would miss polling for an hour or so? Mostly during off peak hours at 3 am there has been instances where there are in gap polling data. This problem was discovered during a server back up. A system engineer was having problems complete backups and want to know if any suspicious activity on the LAN segement during the nightly backups. Personally I don't think the two issue are related but unfortunately, we are not able to tell because of Orion are missing polls. By the way, during this off peak hours little to none activity is being broadcast on then LAN network. There is a flatline CPU MIN/MAX______ _______ then missing data and back to flatline again. Please help Thankss

Jeff,
I'm not sure I have enough information, but I'll guess at what is causing this problem.
"The database or tables within the database are being automatically locked by SQL during the Nightly Maintenance. The automatic locking blocks new data from being added." SQL Server will sometimes automatically switch from record to page, to table locking even though the Nightly Maintence process has requested record or page locking only. This does not happen all the time on all systems, just sometimes. I cannot tell if the size of the database or the size of a transaction affects this or not.
I don't know why it does this. Any DBAs out there got any ideas ?
You can prove this theory by disabling Nightly Maintenance. Simply rename "Database-Maint.exe" to "Database-Maint.exe---" and it will not run. Then see if the missing data problem disappears.
Now the hard part.... how do you keep the table locking from occurring during Nightly Maintenance? I don't know the answer to that. I'll ask around.

I recently upgraded the OS on my Server from Win2k to Win2k3.
After re-installing a slightly newer version of MS SQL (2000b?) I now have this same issue with missing data. Previously I did not miss this data during nightly maintenance.
I will pose this question to our DBA.

What exactly does the nightly maint. do? Is there a document that describes it in detail?
If I know how it works and what it does I might be able to shed some light on this subject.

Have a look in your .../Solarwinds/Network Performance Monitor V.... directory.
There are 2 weeks worth of maintenance logs in there. Mine are around 8Mb each.
Open them up, and you will see exactly what it is doing to the DB.
It takes about 50 minutes to complete on my server.

Any updates on this issue? I have the same problem, except I am only losing my snmp stats, my icmp stats like average response time are fine during the nightly maintenance.
