Implementing Custom MIBs / OIDs

Hi Guys!

Does anybody knows about workarounds at Orion, to implement this functionality? It would be great to have this feature!

Searching trough this forum i mentioned, that there are a lot of guys who want to have the ability to implement their own OID's.

This would make the tool much more usable!! Now im using MRTG for special statistics, but every one knows, MRTG is bad in statistics..

It would be nice to read a statement from Orion, if (or when) it is planned to implement this feature!!

Custom MIB's (or ability to use any MIB in a precompiled DB) is something that has been requested for YEARS with many eloquent, impassioned pleadings from maintenance-paying Solarwinds customers. The requests haven't completely fallen on deaf ears... the Solarwinds staff *are* aware of the requests (and some sales staff dread hearing from me)... but they have yet to provide official public feedback as to why the development request has been ignored, put on the back-burner, if custom MIB's or OID's are really under development, or when to expect the feature. Instead, they (IMHO) have wasted time with other neato-but-unrequested features to throw into the product to feed us while we wait for custom MIB support. I hate having to deploy half a dozen products to do what Orion has so much promise to be able to do, yet can't. Far less expensive products (I can name some if you wish) exist which *do* allow for any MIB OID to be monitored, and some even allow for end-users to compile MIB databases themselves. They're just not as pretty, user-friendly, or as useful as Orion.

The ability to use MIB databases, record values in an SQL database, to graph those values, to alert on them based upon custom thresholds, and the ability to do reports on the data, is DESPERATELY needed in Orion. I would really appreciate someone in charge of Orion development taking the time to actually explain why this has not occurred... something I can give to my management to support a decision to keep or scrap Orion and the maintenance money we budget for it.

We ended up writing our own setup prog, web resource ASPs, polling engine and expanded the Solarwinds database to support special OIDs. It can be done, but was a lot of work. When we clean it up a bit, I might have permission to give it out.

The other thing that some folks are doing is to use the Toolset and export the data into HTML that a resource view puts with the node; or something like that, read through the forums.

I too wish that you could implement custom MIB/OID's.
I'm currently reviewing solutions to monitor/manage the network.
I love the Orion package, but find it limiting with out the custom support.

Not sure about spending all the money, only to have to implement another solution to cover what orion can't. And from looking at the other available options none have the same quality that Solarwinds does

I didn't go as far as tscaggs, but using perl and the Net::SNMP module, wrote my own ASPs and resource files to obtain VRRP status from our Nokia devices. Use the Solarwinds stylesheets and you'll end up with a web page that looks as if it's part of the Orion package.

I'm not a professional programmer, but have done an amount of VBscript in the past. I learnt perl from a book (O'Reilly's Learning Perl - highly recommended), asp from www.w3schools.com and also from just looking in the Solarwinds resource files.

Perl is also free (horray!). Download it from www.activestate.com and install it to your Orion web server with all the options ticked. To install the Net::SNMP module, launch the Perl Package Manager, search for SNMP and then install it (use the help available in PPM for more info). Download info on the SNMP module's routes and syntax from CPAN - www.cpan.org. That should be enough to get you started!
