Dynamic IP address with DHCP - Does it really have a bug?

This is what I would like to accomplish:

Add computer with hostname Laptop1 to Orion. The laptop has a DHCP address. I would like Orion to show Laptop1 as down when the hostname Laptop1 is not active with an IP address. What is happening is when Laptop1 releases its IP address, Laptop2 comes online with the IP address that Laptop1 used previously and Orion shows Laptop1 as being online when actually Laptop2 is online using Laptop1's old IP.

I need the hostnames in Orion to stay static and only report as up or down based on hostname - not IP address. I thought this was the point of the dynamic IP check box when I add a node.

I contacted support and they didn't really seem to even know what the feature does. He ended up telling me it was a bug in the software, but I need this to work!

Thoughts?

I'm having a similar issue, where I'm trying to monitor a Customer device, using ICMP only. I went a step further to create an account on DynDNS.com and associating the IP address to a domain name to overcome the dynmaic IP address issue, as the device is set up to recieve IP address dynamically using DHCP.

I added the node to solarwinds inserting the domain name instead of the IP address, the node was added successfully & was being monitored.

However when I disconnected the device then reconnected it to the network, solarwinds was still searching for the device using the previous IP address that was associated with the device hence it was seen as down.

I did a nslookup even from the server hosting solarwinds & it resolved the new IP of the device succesfully using the domain name, so i'm sure that when the new IP address is recieved it is being mapped succesfully to the device's domain name.

Checking the dynamic IP box when adding the node doesn't give me the expected results.

Can someone assist?
