MIGRATE FROM SQLEXPRESS TO SQL2008R2

Hi...

Newby, first post, be kind.

I have Orion NPM loaded on server 2008 with default SQLExpress install. I want to back this up and migrate to SQL2008 database.

My NPM is still small enough that I am happy to do a new build on the 2008 db from scratch.

1) How do I backup the existing db, the Orion/Advanced/DBmanager cannot find the database.

2)or How do I get Config manager to build a new database instead of modify the existing.

Hi and welcome!

1) Open SWNetPerfMon.DB (default location is C:\Program Files\Solarwinds\Orion\) with a text editor, this file will tell you the name of the SQL server you are connected to and the read/write credentials.

2) Config Wizard can build a new database: Start> Programs > Solarwinds Orion > Configuration Wizard
Click start and follow through the wizard where you specify the name of the new SQL server.

Thanks Good information and a great help.

I do have a remaining problem which I think is due to OBDC issues in the server. The symptom is;

When I run the config tool I cannot see any other SQL servers

When I run the DB Manager tool I cannot see ANY SQL servers

When I run SQL2008 Management tool I cannot see the SQL express database.

If you have any further suggestions I would appreciate it however I think all remaining problems are personal and therefore my own!!

Make sure the SQL Browser Service is running on the remote server. This runs on UDP port 1434 so it may be blocked by internal firewalls.

In any event you can type in the name of the remote SQL server (and instance) for example:

MYSQLSERVER

MYSQLSERVER\MYINSTANCE
