What is Meant By Database Availability?

In SAM I have a MS SQL database that is constantly showing critical in terms of availability. I know this
DB is being used a lot and is clearly available from a usability standpoint. Although there are some
write latency/IO Write Stall problems I'm still working on. How can I tell what's sending this into the
crimson?

There are so many factors that could affect availability. Start by looking at things that would prevent or delay a response to availability checks, such as latency (network, storage, etc) or packet loss. What other metrics for this server are unhealthy? Those should point you to the areas that need to be taken care of.
