Customize e-mail alerts

Hello,

I'm already searching for several days for a complete list of available variables we can use to create a mail with all the necessary information about the alert. I've figured out that there are some changes on the different versions of SAM.

As a test I'm trying to change the high memory usage alert for a VM into this: The device *** with IP **.**.**.*** has currently high memory usage --> 98,86 % !

Threshold Warning: 80 %
Threshold Critical: 90 %

Memory Used: 98,86 %
Percent Used: 772 MB
Memory Available: 1.14 %
Memory Configured: 4,0 G

But I cannot find the memory available percent in the "select variable to insert"-list.

I would like to design a mail just like in the link: https://thwack.solarwinds.com/t5/NPM-Discussions/Variables-for-email-notifications/m-p/276415#M84117 but not all those variables work for me.

The version of SAM is 2020.2

Is there someone who can help me or direct me to a correct list?

What "thing" triggers the alert (see screenshot for here I want you to look)? I can likely map it out there once I get that.

Best way is what you’re doing. Edit an action (event log or email) from an alert of the entity {node, app, etc} that you’re trying to add or find a variable for and search for it there. E.g. insert variable and search.

Other than that this is a reasonable set of documentation that you can reference otherwise. It’s not all inclusive so do keep that in mind. I keep my own documentation for this... and throw every variable I find and commonly use into a flat text file. Not perfect but it works!

Also just keep in mind that variables are relative to the entity being referenced..

Thank you for the link you've added. But when I use this document to for example get the memory usage of a VM and I use the variables in the document, section Node and when I do a simulate I see this:

Percentage of total note memory used over polling interval: ${N=SwisEntity;M=PercentMemoryUsed}
Total node memory available: ${N=SwisEntity;M=TotalMemory}

As @jm_sysadmin mentioned, what’s the entity that triggers the alert. You mentioned virtual machine. I’m not familiar with the variable set that’s available to that entity... would require a bit of digging as the variable you tried I’m pretty certain are node specific variables.

Could be very possible to access them (relatively) for example like this: ${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.TotalMemory}. That’s strictly guessing and don’t assume that would work.

So I think the list of items you need to update are below:

${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.Caption}
${N=SwisEntity;M=IPAddress}
${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.MemoryAvailable}
${N=SwisEntity;M=MemUsage}
${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.TotalMemory} ${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.MemoryUsed}
${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.PercentMemoryAvailable}
${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.PercentMemoryUsed}

Since you are alerting on the Virtual Machines data, N=SwisEntity;M=Node. is the prefix that tells the alert to look at the nodes table. If this is something you do again you may want to dig in a get comfortable, as an Orion admin, working with this data is very useful. In the image below, you can see that I navigated the variable browser to find the "stuff" off the nodes table.

Now I selected sort of the "normal" way to grab a device name, but there are lots of products in Orion that read data from different (and sometimes the same) spots to do basically the same job. To replace caption, maybe the variable below work better for this alert. In fact, if your Virtual machine isn't a Node, then you likely don't want to grab from that table. For alerts that are just VM's, GuestDnsName might be a good choice, and there are lots of choices depending on the products you have installed.

${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.DisplayName} (Orion core? )
${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.DNS} (Orion core? )

${N=SwisEntity;M=Node.AssetInventory.ServerInformation.HostName} (SAM)

And I am sure there are more options too. Below is are variable from a VM that isn't a node in my environment. You can see that some of the values are Null, but for fully monitored nodes, I have all of these populated. I am also still pulling the IP from the Virtual Machines Table, sometimes data is in more than one spot.
