Why when scanning my network for snmp enabled devices with Network Performance Monitor Discovery ..

Hey all,

Well I am trying to import more devices into Orion but I seem to be having issues with the scanner missing lots of hosts. I will scan lets say a 10.44.128.0/255.255.240.0 and with the 300 switches that are on that network, it only detected like around 140 and if I scan again, it never finds anymore. If I go to the system manager and click new and add a 10.44.130.200 address, it will find the switch but not with a mass scan.

Anybody know what I can do? Just to confirm, yes the snmp name is proper and I have slowed down the scanning as low as it goes and it still doesn't find it and yes the hosts are up and reachable and no fw is blocking anything or any acl's.

Any help would be great.

only thing that might possibly fit this is that the switch is busy when you ran the scan and it discarded the SNMP request due to it having higher priority tasks to accomplish.

This would only apply if the switches that are not responding are really busy.

i would suggest increasing the SNMP values in your network discovery. increase both RETRIES and PACKET TIMEOUTS

Hemitruck, the switches aren't too busy that they are not responding. I am doing it after hours usually when the switch useage is very low.

ichance, I have doubled those numbers in the settings for snmp and still same issue. It seems the only way to add new devices that this scanner misses is by system manager which is a not very effective way.

Any other tips?

Can I ask what version of NPM you are running? I've seen this a couple of times in the past, but not recently.

Also - have you tried to change the subnet you are discovering? i.e. breaking it down to individual class c's instead of 255.255.240.0?

Hi cereal83, I had exactly the same problem scanning our network. We've got 1000+ Cisco devices (spread across two class Bs and a couple of class Cs) and a full network scan was only returning 45 devices. Solarwinds support had me jumping through hoops for weeks trying all sorts of different things (manually specifying lists of IP addresses, doing wireshark dumps, etc.). It wasn't until I got stroppy with them over the lack of progress that it got escalated to a developer who immediately identified it as a known bug that wasn't going to be fixed until the next MAJOR release of Orion NPM.

I was unable to get a date out of them for that release and currently have one of their support guys RDC'd into our server manually adding all our devices, one by one, through using the GUI.

Hope things work out for you and if they don't start making a noise at your account manager.

Davbyrd, I am using SolarWinds Orion Network Performance Monitor 9.1 SP4. I have also tried changing the subnet so like 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.255.128 (yes i know how subnets work) with no more luck. If the range gets scanned and then I do a re-scan, it will never pick up that node so I have to add it manually.

GaryP, Thanks for that info. I wish they could fix it as I have alot of devices to add and I am doing it daily but it would be nice just to be able to add it all in one shot. I will be escalating it soon but I try to get things resolved here before going any higher.

Just a quick note to point out that, as of 9.5, this is no longer an issue for us and all devices are no discovered correctly.

Hello GaryP and thanks for the update. I have recently purchased the software and installed 9.5 and I have noticed the new scanner and it does work wonderfully so far. Only issue I see is I can no longer use seed files and it is webbases and with different ip ranges, this is a very tedious task.

I will open a ticket for this issue though.
