Question regarding Interface Alerts

Hi all,

I'm very new to Solarwinds and NPM so forgive me if this question has been asked before or is in the wrong place.

When it comes to email alerts regarding a DOWN interface is there a variable that will contain the DESTINATION node on that interface?

For example, when I look at the NPM Network Topology on my node I can see which interfaces connect to other nodes, is it possible for an email alert to tell me which node the interface connects to?

Edit existing Advanced Alert "Alert me when an interface goes down". Try to use following macro in trigger action message

${SQL:SELECT Nodes.Caption FROM Nodes JOIN TopologyData ON (Nodes.NodeID=MappedNodeID) WHERE SourceInterfaceID=${InterfaceID}}

If you are talking about Cisco devices and you run CDP in your network, you can create a custom poller for CDP neighbor. That information could be sent along with an alert.

I would think implementing dependencies might be a more streamlined way to get this information, but it can be useful to poll CDP info for this and other purposes.

Hi d09h, thanks for the reply I will definitely look into something like that.

I'm just thinking that maybe it's a little easier. To clarify the original question:

In the screenshot we're monitoring the trunk ports on Noble-C1, and the NPM Network Topology shows where those interfaces go. Are those destination node values available in an alert variable?

Maybe an easier option is to have the destination as part of the Interface description. Then use the following alert which will email you the description of the interface as well.

Interface ${IfName} on Node ${Node.Caption} was reported as ${Status} at ${DateTime}

The interface description is: "${Caption}"
