There have been several posts in the past about how to place nodes on google maps as well as a few others that add properties for the lat/long of a device. From what I could tell, all required you to enter in those lat/long values manually as part of the configuration.
But what happens if that datacenter moves? Say the networking and server gear is in truck or an airplane, and you want to track its location dynamically as it moves? Has anyone solved for this?
Since very little networking or server equipment is provisioned with integrated GPS or other location detection capabilities, it requires some other external tracking mechanism. For example, having a GPS on the plane or the truck would be sufficient. However, to update the equipment, is there a way to have its location updated based upon its relationship to its carrier (the plane/truck)? Or perhaps there is a way to slap on a GPS transmitter on each piece of gear to track its whereabouts. Now, we need something to monitor those GPS receivers and then update the corresponding network element's location. This latter solution solves for the question of how to deal with the movement of equipment between vehicles in a more automated way.
So has anyone solved for this before? How did you construct this using NPM or other tools?
