Where is the MIB Database Used?

I've got kind of a generic question followed by a little more detail for why I'm asking...

Where is the MIB Database used within Orion? I imagine it is used for the UnDP.

The reason I ask, we need to monitor some traps from our UPSs but we're not really seeing much detail through the web interface. I downloaded the latest database today and it didn't fix the problem. I looked up the mib through OID View (http://www.oidview.com/mibs/0/UPS-MIB.html) and most of the information that is missing seems to be there. Fromw hat I can see, this looks like a standard mib and I assumed it would already be in the database. (If not, I can open a ticket.)

The trap type I'm seeing shows up as: SNMPv2-SMI:mib-2.33.2.0.1 Which isn't very helpful and some of the object stuff shows as: upsObjects.9.7

That is where I found it most useful. It is used by the System when it snmp polls devices that you are monitoring with SNMP and if the MIB database does not include it then the results you see in the Node Details would not be very detailed.

I recently saw this with the VMWare servers. In previous versions of Orion and older MIB database file this server was seen as a linux server and thats it. Now because of an updated MIB file, these same servers are listed as VMWare servers and there are all kinds of OID's like virtual server memory stats for each virtual server, same with cpu, etc.

So its not just for the pollers its for anything that orion is using snmp to query against that node and provides to you, whether its the out of the box stuff or a custom made universal device poller. When you add a node and tell Orion to monitor it using snmp it uses a basic OID to gather basic information to display for the node. to get more granular with what you're wanting you will need to use the Universal Device Poller.

Your issue can be a combination of two things that are needed. One, you need to submit the MIB file from your UPS Vendor to Solarwinds if you think your vendors OIDs are not recognized in Orion. They will compile it into a new MIB file every week. I've done this for my Cisco ASA firewall. Second thing you need to do is, once you get the new MIB file installed in Orion, then you will need to build a Universal Device Poller for this UPS.

Try the UDP first. If you know the OID's for the UPS, then try it by creating a Universal Device Poller and test it to see if it returns a result or not.

I already poll the devices for certain data and the vendor information is included. The problem I'm running into is with the information from the traps (which I can't test unless I touch the device.) The data the ups is returning looks like its in a non-vendor specific mib so I'm assuming its already loaded. I'm also assuming the data on the trap page changes when a new mib is loaded.

Try running a MIB Walk on it. MIB walk is a tool available through the Engineer Toolset. If you don't have the toolset then you might be able to find a free MIB Walk program by googling Free MIB Walk.

I've had to start by running a MIB Walk, then looking at the results to see if it returned what I'm looking for. If you do then try loading the OID in the Universal Device Poller to see if it see's it.

It could also be that the Solarwinds doesn't have the detailed OIDs that you're looking for.

In my case with the Cisco ASA firewall. Now out of the box, Orion can return some results for the ASA as most devices can for Orion but its Standard information. If I wanted to see something more specific like VPN sessions then the MIB database that Orion had compiled may not have that. Cisco published specific MIB files for different components of the firewall, and other vendors do the same. I had to find which MIB file gave me what I was looking for and submit it to Solarwinds to include. This may be the case with you. Your vendor may have split up some of the detailed MIBs away from their "Standard" OID's that they usually provide, which is why you're only seeing basic information. Check with your vendor to see if they have something like that that you can get ahold of. Of course it could always come down to the vendor not creating what you're looking for. If your vendor is APC then I doubt that is the case though.

Well, it turns out one of my assumtions was wrong. I used our MIB walker tool and found the proper values but the the proper MIB wasn't loaded. Turned out we had an older version of the RFC MIB and when I replaced it with the newer version I got the data.

I'll be submitting a ticket.

May I ask which UPS family you are using?

It would be helpful is SolarWinds would have a handy-dandy monitoring thwack forum for the more popular device types. Server hardware (Dell, HP, IBM); UPS (Liebert, APC...); Switches (Cisco, DELL, Extreme, Juniper, ...) and so on so that we can document how to set montoring up using some better/best practices.

I did a little OID UPS work on APC devices that may be helpful.
