Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
can't add certain windows 2000 nodes
mmcdermott
I am running Orion Network Performance monitor version 7.8. I am using group policy to configure the snmp service on both my windows server 2003 and server 2000 boxes. Most of my server nodes add and work just fine. I have a handful of windows 2000 servers that i cannot add. Nothing about the snmp service is different and they are on the same network segment as the other machines that i monitor. When i attempt to add the node i get the error back ' "servername" does not respond to SNMP queries using "snmp string"'. I have confirmed that the snmp string and permitted managers is set correctly on these boxes. Any ideas
thanks

Hi Mike,
Others have had similar issues - usually it's a configuration setting on the server being polled (built-in firewall, antivirus or w.h.y.)

Try doing a "netstat -a" & look for SNMP running on UDP port 161 on the server you are trying to poll. SNMP is also case sensitive & does not accept some characters such as _
This one's kinda tough to troubleshoot remotely via the forums...

Thanks, i will follow your suggestions. I know it's not exactly an easy problem to troubleshoot via a forum. The community strings are identical to the others so i am suspecting it's something with the 2k OS.
thanks again

ok this is pretty interesting. I was looking at the snmp config through my mmc console using the computer management spapin for the servers in question. With that view, it had all the info that was dished out from the snmp gpo. After banging my head against the wall for a bit i logged onto the actual server and looked at the config and it was not the same. it was set manually and didnt have the right info in there. i added in the right info and all is well. Thanks a lot microsoft management console.
